Passenger in suspect’s vehicle dies after 3-vehicle crash in Palm Springs

The passenger who was riding in a wanted suspect’s car during a three-vehicle crash in Palm Springs last Thursday died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the collision, according to police.

Officers haven’t released the man’s identity at this time. The wanted suspect and one victim remain at the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The two suspects were wanted in connection to two home burglaries in North Palm Springs.

Several people were injured and thousands were without power after the wanted suspect ran a red light, causing the three-vehicle crash around 12:15 p.m. The crash occurred at Indian Canyon Drive and Racquet Club Road.

According to Palm Springs Police Sergeant Harvey Reed, the wanted suspect was driving a black Chevy Impala east on Racquet Club Road and ran a red light, colliding with two SUVs. The SUVs were a blue Chevrolet Suburban and a white Ford Edge.

Officers said the suspect had just fled a traffic stop before the crash occurred.

After colliding with the two SUVs, the Impala hit a light pole and a power pole, which caused a power outage in Palm Springs for 1,810 Southern California Edison customers. Officials said power was out from Indian Canyon Drive south to Via Escuela, and also from Via Escuela to Camino Sur.

Officials with Southern California Edison said there was still 510 customers without power as of 2:30 p.m. Power was expected to be fully restored by the end of the afternoon. Check the outage map for updates.

Sgt. Reed said the victim who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries was riding in the Chevy Suburban.

A total of eight people were injured in the crash; four adults and four children. The four children and one adult sustained minor injuries.

The intersection of Indian Canyon Drive and Racquet Club Road was closed until just before 6 p.m. Thursday after being shut down for hours while the Palm Springs Police Department and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
