2 men busted by Border Patrol with 28 lbs. of cocaine

Two Calexico residents were arrested Tuesday night after Border Patrol agents caught them attempting to smuggle 28 lbs. of cocaine stuffed in a duffel bag.

Agents spotted one of the men carrying the bag north of the International Boundary Fence around 10 p.m. They said he began waving toward a vehicle that had stopped near the intersection of Menvielle Road and Highway 98.

The man put the duffel bag into the trunk and got inside the vehicle before the pair drove away together. Agents said they stopped the vehicle soon after and found six wrapped packages of cocaine inside the duffel bag.

The two men are both U.S. citizens and they were arrested at the scene.

According to the release, the cocaine weighed 28.4 lbs. and had an estimated street value of about $369,000. The men, cocaine and vehicle were turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations.

Last fiscal year, agents said they seized more than 148 lbs. of cocaine.
