Indio Police issue warning about scam

Indio police are warning small businesses about a potential scam involving their power bills.

The scam involves someone calling the business claiming to be an Imperial Irrigation District employee seeking payment for a past due utility bill.

The caller says there’s a problem like a check was written incorrectly or the bank rejected an electronic payment.

The business is threatened with their power being shut-off at the end of the day and the victim is told to go to a store to get a “Green Dot MoneyPak” to pay the bill.

Imperial Irrigation says they would never ask for payment in that way and anyone getting a suspicious call should contact them immediately at 1-800-303-7756.

If IID confirms the call is a hoax, the person should also call local police to report the attempted scam.
