2 killed on I-10 after man carrying baby crosses into traffic

We’re learning more information after a man and his six-month-old son were hit by three vehicles while walking across I-10 in Beaumont Thursday night.

Officers with the California Highway Patrol said a 23-year-old woman from Beaumont called 911 to report an argument she had with her boyfriend, 40-year-old Miguel Mariscal, at about 10 p.m. Before officers arrived, Mariscal walked away from the home with the couple’s son in his arms.

Soon after, people began calling CHP dispatch to report a man with an infant walking eastbound in eastbound lanes of I-10 between Highway 60 and Beaumont Avenue.

Just before 10:30 p.m., a 67-year-old man from Palm Springs was driving his Prius just east of Highway 60, when Mariscal walked into traffic lanes, directly into the path of the Prius, according to the CHP’s release.

The man and his son were struck by two additional vehicles after the Prius hit them head-on. A 64-year-old Santa Monica man collided with them in a Mercedes and then a 56-year-old man also hit them in a Sequoia.

Both father and son died at the scene.

Family members contacted KESQ and CBS Local 2 Friday afternoon and said the boy’s name was Yadriel Mariscal. His aunt told us they spoke to the coroner’s office around 2:30 p.m.

His family set up a Go Fund Me account to raise money for Yadriel’s funeral.

None of the drivers were injured in the collision.

Officers said it’s still unclear why Miguel Mariscal was trying to cross the freeway with his child. They also don’t know his intended destination.

CHP is handling the investigation and officers continue to interview witnesses and analyze physical evidence from the scene. Officers said alcohol and/or drugs have not been ruled out as a contributing factor in the collision.

All eastbound lanes of I-10 were closed in the area while emergency crews responded Thursday night.
