Woman’s Club of Indio presents valley students with scholarships

The Woman’s Club of Indio presented college scholarships to six local students Wednesday. The ladies were awarded $6,000 in scholarship money. They chose students based on grade point average, community involvement, recommendations and essays submitted.

“We just enjoy seeing the girls and knowing that they’re going to be going on and getting their education and that we helped them do that,” saidDebbie Council, Vice President of the Woman’s Club of Indio.

For some of the students, they’re the first in their family to go to college.

“I’m really thankful because my dreams couldn’t come true without this,” said Areli Rodriguez. “They are helping me get there.”

The following students were selected as this year’s recipients:

Veronica Santibanez- College of the Desert

Areli Rodriguez, Silvia Ruelas, Brittany Dean- Shadow Hills High School

Alicia Beltran- Indio Hills High School

Joanna Madrigal- Amistad High School

All of the scholarship money was raised at the club’s annual fundraiser in February.
