16-year-old Mecca shooting suspect arrested

Two people were shot in Mecca Saturday, police say, in a drive-by at an apartment complex.

Police say around 9 a.m. a 16-year-old male and a 25-year old man were shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex on the 91000 block of 7th Street.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Sergeant Randy Vasquez says an older, dark-colored van drove by and someone inside fired shots toward people in the lot.

The van took off, but was later located. The 16-year-old driver was arrested.

The two victims were treated for life-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital.

The 16-year-old suspect was booked into juvenile hall on charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call Investigator Burgie at the Thermal Sheriff’s Station at 760-863-8488.
