Desert Christian Academy changes end of year tradition to save water

Desert Christian Academy hosted its annual Water Day on the last day of school, but with a few changes because of the drought.

Students jumped into summer at the Palm Desert Aquatic Center.

The school’s Water Day is an annual tradition, but this year, the school took a different approach.

“Typically, we’ve been doing that at our campus, and we’ve been renting large inflatable water slides. But this year, one of our students actually made the suggestion that we look into an alternative because of the drought conditions,” Head of School Debbee Scott said.

Instead, students got some well-deserved fun in the sun, without wasting any water.

“Well, certainly, the drought is at a serious condition. Not everyone is aware about here in California and we just want to do our part. We just felt it was really unwise and poor stewardship to use water in a way that’s not necessary,” Scott said.

While the day celebrated the end of the year, students seemed to understand the importance of the change of venue.

“Because they already are using the water here, so it’s good to use the water that they’re already using than to use the water at our school so that we can conserve water for the drought,” fifth grader Brooke Hesser said.

“It’s huge and we should all do our part to save the drought by coming to places like this and having a good time. There’s a lot of stuff we can do to prevent it and it’s just important to be careful of it,” junior Casey Harrelo said.

The change of venue went over so well the school said it plans to make it a new water day tradition.
