CVWD wants customers to do the math
The Coachella Valley Water District is asking its customers to get out their latest water bill and a calculator to see if they are on track to pay drought penalties.
This historical drought in California is affecting residents drastically nationwide. After Governor Jerry Brown mandated a decrease of 36% in water usage, the Coachella Valley Water District has imposed a hefty fine for those overusing, starting in July.
A simple 7-step form can be found on their website, where all you need to find out if you will be charged more is your latest water bill and a calculator.
“If you’re under for the month that you are looking at, chances are you are going to be under for every month. We find that people who are over the budget, it’s a pretty consistent thing, except for extenuating circumstances, like if you have a leak in your home,” informs Heather Engel, the Director of Communication Conservation for the CVWD.
“These will go into effect with July bills, which is June water-use, so you really want to know now and take the steps now if you are facing that,” said Engel.
The CVWD personalizes every single water budget, dependent on the number of people in your household, size of your lot, and so on. Therefore the “drought penalty” differentiates from household to household.
If you do find that you are over the limit, or simply want to learn other ways in which you can limit water usage, the CVWD is keen on enlightening their customers on how to conserve water. Tips can be found online, or by calling their office at (760) 391-9600.
