Thermal brush fire 100% contained

A fire that broke out in a Thermal mulch field on Monday was 100 percent contained by Wednesday, after blackening nearly 20 acres.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 11:37 p.m. Monday near Avenue 73 and Pierce Street, Riverside County fire officials said.

Spots of smoldering mulch were expected to persist for the next day or so within the containment lines, and will be addressed by the property owner using heavy equipment, fire officials said.

Many residents in La Quinta were contacting News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 throughout the day Tuesday to report they were dealing with heavy smoke in the area. Some folks thought there may have been a new fire that sparked near the La Quinta Cove, but the smoke was just from the fire smoldering in Thermal.
