Indio jail inmate who died was from Palm Desert

A Palm Desert man died Monday morning after apparently suffering a medical emergency while being held at the Riverside County Jail in Indio.

The coroner’s office identified the man on Tuesday as 27-year-old Joaquin Ernesto Crespo. He died at J.F.K. Memorial Hospital at 7:37 a.m. after being taken there in medical distress, officials said.

Sergeant Randy Vasquez with the sheriff’s department said there were no indications of foul play. Crespo’s cause of death is still under investigation.

Officials said Crespo was arrested at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Thrush Street and Edgehill Road in Palm Desert. He was booked into jail shortly after 2 a.m. on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs and for violating a protective order.

His bail was set at $5,000, according to jail records.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Crespo was in a holding area when he required medical assistance at about 6:45 a.m. Monday. Deputies and medical staff delivered preliminary medical treatment before transporting him to the hospital.

Officials with the sheriff’s department, the Thermal Station and the Coroner’s Bureau are investigating his death.
