Bridge collapse detours congest Hi-Desert roads

The collapsed bridge in Desert Center pushed a high volume of traffic into the Hi-Desert Monday as drivers were forced to travel up and down alternate routes.

“Crazy, a lot busier than usually when I come up here from Palm Springs,” said Carolyn Cullen.

A tour bus full of Seniors 60 Plus made a stop a Denny’s in Yucca Valley. Headed to Hollywood from Dallas they were taking a 90 to 100 mile detour.

“The drive itself wasn’t that bad, it took a little longer,” said Gloria Murnane, organizer of the Seniors 60 Plus trip.

Despite the delays their spirits were still high because ladies had places to be.

“We’re on our way to be on the Price is Right. We’re doing good with the time,” said Murnane.

We spotted more travelers filled up parking lots, grocery stores and restaurants to help get them through the detour.

“I think it’s going to be good for the businesses around here because people are going to want to eat, they need gas.”

For drivers heading to or from Phoenix plan ahead, give yourself enough time and keep an eye out for traffic alerts.

“If they’re coming this way read the signs and you’re about to do a detour,” said tour bus driver Harlequin Pipkins.
