3 rescued near White Water after 2-day hike

Three of six hikers had to be rescued on Sunday afternoon due to illness, lack of water and dehydration after setting out on a hike along the Pacific Crest Trail that was planned for two days.

Officials said the group began its hike at 7:30 a.m. Saturday from Black Mountain Trail and Truck Trail in Idyllwild. The hike was planned for overnight with the group finishing at the Snow Creek community in White Water the following day.

Around 2:40 p.m. Sunday, three of the hikers were unable to finish the descent into Snow Creek and had to be rescued from 4,000 feet elevation, according to the release. They were airlifted to safety by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said the rescued hikers were in good health and no medical attention was needed. They were all from Banning, and officials identified them as 45-year-old Benji Schicke, 27-year-old Mick Spencer and 23-year-old Kile Stewart.

Deputies use this rescue as a reminder to all hikers to carry proper equipment and have a well-thought-out travel plan shared with family and friends. Make sure you’re carrying proper equipment such as GPS, maps and compasses, proper clothing and plenty of water.
