Mayoral campaign signs stir debate in Palm Springs
At the corner of Mesquite Avenue and Palm Canyon you’ll see more than a handful of campaign signs. Local attorney Bob Weinstein’s campaign headquarters is turning heads, and some people in Palm Springs aren’t too happy about it.
“I think people would just like not to be seeing that before the campaign season even begins,” said business owner Joy Meredith. “Even during the campaign season it’s frustrating when there’s all of this repetitive signage.”
Weinstein said he put up the signs just a couple days ago. He sent us the following statement.
“I am in complete compliance with Palm Springs Municipal Code 93.20.08(A)(1)(a), wherein there is no size limit for signs at campaign headquarters.”
City Clerk James Thompson confirmed signs at campaign headquarters are exempt from size regulations, but because the city doesn’t normally deal with signs up this early, it’s looking into the complaint and revisiting the code of compliance, which typically allows campaign signs 30 days before an election.
Thompson said city leaders will also have to determine if the building is in fact Weinstein’s headquarters.
Weinstein said the problem isn’t his signs, it’s blighted buildings in the community he and the city need to focus on.
“If my sign draws attention to this blighted condition across the street, I have succeeded in part in focusing the true issues that affect the community. For too long the South End of Palm Springs, was and continues to be ignored. Hopefully I can make a change come election time and make all of Palm Springs safe again,” said Weinstein.
