Veterans of Foreign Wars targeted by vandals in DHS
Shattered windows and the rocks that broke through them are what vandals left behind at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1534 in Desert Hot Springs.Veterans George Mader and Tom Ward said the rocks were thrown sometime F riday night.
“They have no respect. None. It’s wrong,” said Mader.
“It’s a recreational place for us to tell war stories, enjoy ourselves and have meals once in a while. To have something like this is a blow in the gut to all of the veterans,” said Ward.
It’s not the first time the building was vandalized. There used to be a VFW sign out front until it was shot at by BB guns and rocks smashed through the office space.
“They come and vandalize the place, break windows, try to break in, see what they can steal, just come and do damage just for doing it,” said Ward.
Mader said her reported the incident to police and officers told him they will increase patrols in the area. Theveterans said they plan step up their security measures.
“We have some things we’re going to work on most definitely,” Mader said.
More needs to be done, Mader added.
“It’s not always us to correct people. It’s up to parents. It’s starts at home. If you can’t control your kids at home what do you expect everyone else to do with them.”
Mader and the VFW members are asking for the community’s support to help replace what’s been damaged.
