James “Gypsy” Haake is cemented among the stars

Another legend is cemented in the streets in Palm Springs.

James “Gypsy” Haake is the oldest working female impersonator in the world.

As one of the stars of local dinner show Carnival Cabaret, Gypsy is no stranger to the spotlight.

At Sunday’s Palm Springs Walk of Stars dedication the spotlight was the beaming desert sun, but as usual Gypsy was the star.

A massive crowd showed up to honor his 60 years in show business.

His niece Paula Woodley was among those who introduced the star.

Woodley said while audiences see the snarky, over-the-top Gypsy on stage, off stage Gypsy is just a guy sitting in his sweats.

“He reads every two, three days. He’ll eat anything we cook. He makes me laugh until I cry. We go shopping for clothes, he’s just a regular guy, but better,” Woodley said.

Gypsy got his start on Broadway but retired from the business in his 30s.

Years later he returned as an emcee at La Cage aux Folles night club in West Hollywood.

He’s quick to note he doesn’t dress in drag.

“I don’t wear wigs or boobs or anything like that,” Gypsy said.

He said the costumes itch like heck, but he’s still performing at the age of 83.

“He’s just pure magic, he can’t help it. And when he puts that makeup on and gets out on that stage, you don’t know what’s going to happen. You don’t know what’s going to come out of his mouth,” Carnival Cabaret associate producer Alfie Pettit said.

Over the years he’s learned a thing or two about wisdom.

“The thing I’ve learned above everything, anyone who gives advice needs it more than the person you’re talking to,” Gypsy said.

But as the oldest working female impersonator in the world, Gypsy isn’t stopping anytime soon.

“I always say my makeup’s by Forest Lawn. So if they don’t beckon I’m here,” Gypsy said.

As the newest inductee of an elite group, he said all he can feel is gratitude.
