Construction continues on major Palm Desert development
Bulldozers are starting to lay the ground work for the new Millennium Palm Desert community. Once complete, the 152 acre lot that runs between Gerald Ford Drive and Interstate 10 will feature homes, apartments, shops, restaurants, and businesses. It’ll cost about $300 million to complete.
The residential component of the build, Genesis, will have 166 single-family homes to be built on 38 acres at Portola and Dinah Shore Drive. The first homes should be built by December.
The space, adjacent to the Cal State Campus, was a just a patch of desert for years, where drifting sands would blow onto roadways and into parking lots.
“Once a week I have to blow off the sand just in our parking lot, the sand is bad here,” said Beth Derrick, hotel manager at Barkingham Palace.
“The construction hasn’t bothered us at all, they have it well marked there is lots of lanes at the intersection of Portola and Dinah Shore, it has been really workable and it hasn’t been a problem for any of our clients or our staff,” said Nancy Scott, owner of My Gym in Palm Desert.
Local business owners are excited about getting new customers in the area.
“I am over the moon about it, this whole end of the valley around the new location for My Gym is building and growing so fast, we are welcoming those families and we are seeing a huge increase in numbers in young families all coming from the I-10 corridor,” said Scott.
The city of Palm Desert owns two parts of the project. Ten acres will be set aside for multi-family housing and 27 acres will be used to build a park.
