Animal services looks for owner of 200 lb. tortoise

Officials with the Riverside County Department of Animal Services said they’re hoping the owner of a 200 pound tortoise comes forward after an officer discovered the giant reptile Wednesday night, southeast of Hemet.

Spokesman John Welsh said the officer found the tortoise at a location along Sage Road and it appeared to be in good shape.

The tortoise is now at the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus in San Jacinto, located at 581 S. Grand Avenue. Welsh said he hopes the owner shows up to claim the tortoise on Thursday.

The age and sex of the tortoise aren’t known.

If you have any information about the tortoise, please call the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus at 951-358-7387.
