Suspect is dead after high speed chase and stand-off
Police confirm an armed carjacking suspect who led authorities on a wild pursuit and then ran into a restaurant in Downey is dead.
The man led police on a long pursuit, mostly on surface streets, running red lights and weaving in and out of traffic.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thursday, police used a PIT maneuver to stop the driver.
He jumped out of the car, appeared to fire shots into the air, and ran into Chris and Pitts restaurant in Downey on Lakewood Boulevard.
Diners could be seen fleeing the restaurant one by one.
Police fired a flash bang into the restaurant before entering.
A barrage of gunfire could be heard outside and authorities confirmed the man was dead at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
There are no reports of anyone else being injured.
