School bus involved in deadly Yucca Valley head-on collision

A man in his 60s died in a head-on crash involving a school bus in Yucca Valley Friday morning.

The crash happened at 7 a.m. as the school bus was heading eastbound on Yucca Trail and the driver tried to make a left turn onto La Contenta to get to La Contenta Middle School.

That’s when the school bus struck a pickup truck driving westbound on Yucca Trail. Officers with the California Highway Patrol said the pickup was traveling about 60 MPH. The man died at the scene.

At least two kids were injured in the crash and were taken to High Desert Medical Center, complaining of head and neck pain. There were 40 students on board at the time.

Officers said the morning sun may have been a factor in the crash and they’re continuing to investigate.

Parents told us the school phone system was down and they couldn’t reach school officials to find out if their kids were okay.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 received a number of calls and messages on social media from parents expressing how dangerous the intersection is, and how they feel a traffic light needs to be in place.

Natalie Brunell has been in Yucca Valley throughout the morning working to get more information. We’ll have live updates throughout the day as more details become available.
