Mecca car crash kills pedestrian

The California Highway Patrol said a 59-year-old man from Mecca died after being hit by a pickup truck Monday morning on Highway 111.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Alberto Coyt-Gudino.

Officers said the collision happened south of Highway 195 in Mecca at about 6 a.m. A woman was driving a pickup truck northbound on Highway 111 at about 50 MPH when her truck collided with Coyt-Gudino.

CHP said he was crossing the highway outside of a crosswalk when he was hit by the pickup. Coyt-Gudino died at the scene.

Officers said the deadly collision helps emphasize the importance of pedestrians using designated crosswalks. If a crosswalk isn’t in the area, officers remind folks to look both ways before crossing the road and also advise people to wear bright colored clothing to improve their visibility. They also said it’s a good idea to carry a flashlight in areas lacking street lights.

Drivers are reminded to keep their eyes on the roadway ahead of them at all times.
