Construction east of Jefferson interchange creates major delays on I-10

The Jefferson Street interchange project typically creates traffic delays on I-10, but construction east of the interchange is creating some significant delays Tuesday morning.

The left two eastbound lanes of the freeway are closed for about a half a mile just east of Jefferson Street. The lanes are expected to be closed until 2 p.m. because crews have to wait for concrete to dry.

Officer Mike Radford with the California Highway Patrol said Caltrans crews are replacing the seals at the joints of the bridge.

Due to the lane closures, traffic is currently backed up near Washington Street. Drivers should use alternate routes or expect major delays throughout the day.

CHP said the same work will take place on Wednesday in the No. 3 lane on the right side of the freeway, so more delays can be expected.

UPDATE: Caltrans canceled Wednesday project because of Tuesday’s delays. It will be rescheduled for a later date.
