Moreno Valley police K9 recovering after being stabbed

A police K9 in Moreno Valley is recovering after being stabbed by an assault suspect who refused to come out of his home Tuesday night.

According to authorities, police K9 ‘Dre’ sustained a collapsed lung after being sent inside the home located in the 15000 block of Zaharias Street just after 10 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a head wound which he apparently sustained after being struck with a blunt object.

Authorities determined 39-year-old Noor Kakar was responsible for the attack. They found Kakar standing on his porch holding a metallic object before he ran inside the house, refusing to exit the home.

When officers entered his residence, they saw Kakar holding a knife. Officers used pepper ball rounds and a taser to try and disarm the suspect, but then he allegedly threw a knife at officers and retreated further into the home.

Officers sent K9 Dre inside, believing the suspect was now unarmed but knowing he was still a threat to personnel, according to the release. Kakar managed to arm himself with another knife and stabbed Dre in the side.

Officers used a taser again which ultimately ended with Kakar’s arrest.

Dre was immediately transported to a local veterinarian hospital where he is now resting comfortably. Officers said he will remain hospitalized for several days and is expected to make a full recovery.

K9 Dre is a 5-year-old German Mallnios and has been with the sheriff’s department for three years. officers said in the release.

Kakar was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, and upon his medical release, he will be booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for several felony violations including assault and injury of a police service dog, authorities said.
