UFOs transform Golf Cart Parade into Area 51
It was an out of this world invasion in Palm Desert Sunday afternoon. Aliens and UFOs took over El Paseo for the 51st Annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade.
“It’s pretty wild. I like all the different colors and all the people doing different things and just people having fun,” said parade goer Scott Williams.
These aren’t your grandpa’s golf carts, space ships and flying saucers all rolling down Palm Desert’s famous shopping district El Paseo.
“The energy is huge. The theme is ‘Area 51’ so the space machines and the martians, everybody is really going all out in decorations,” said parade entry chair Lynn Hawks.
Our cameras spotted ET getting a ride, even two martians enjoying the desert sun.
“It’s outstanding, Palm Desert is very, very nice. We come down for golf and for food in Palm Desert,” said Mr. Martian from planet X. After all nothing says little green men can’t enjoy a round or two on the links!
“I think it would be fun to go dress up like a martian then go play golf,” said Williams.
Nearly 25,000 people lined the street to watch the unique spectacle in it’s 51st year.
“Some of them you don’t know they are golf carts,” said Palm Desert council member and parade judge Sabby Jonathan.
“There is a couple that are enormous. One is two golf carts long. It has a crashed spaceship and a dead martian and all kinds of netting and it’s spectacular,” said Hawks.
Even our own expert in all sky related matters Meteorologist Jeff Forgeron joined in on the fun. News Channel 3 morning team Jeff Stall and Bianca Rae rode along side CBS Local 2 morning team Tom Tucker and Jenifer Daniels. They too couldn’t miss out on trying to discover the secrets of Area 51.
“It is just so exciting because its all about family. It’s all about the community. It’s kind of a kick off of the season,” said Hawks.
The ‘Men in Black’ where at the parade to keep every one in line. “We like to save the planet and kill monsters and a lot more,” said Agent J.
“It’s great, there’s a lot of neat little things that they do. It’s a lot of fun,” said Williams.
This year nearly 90 entries entertained parade goers.
