Cathedral City officers involved in shooting could return to work Thursday

Two Cathedral City police officers involved in a shooting on Saturday night may return to work Thursday, pending they clear a psychological screening and nothing develops with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department’s investigation, or the internal investigation, according to Cathedral City Police Captain Robinson.

While the investigation into the death of 30-year-old Dominic Hutchinson is ongoing, the two officers, whom have worked for the Cathedral City Police Department for over two years, may have their names released soon if an investigation determines that no threats have been made, said Cathedral City Police Chief George Crum.

Deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said Cathedral City police responded to a domestic violence call at an apartment complex on the 68-200 block of 33rd Avenue. Cathedral City officers attempted to contact one of the involved parties of the dispute.

Police said they were able to contact Hutchinson and that’s when the officer-involved shooting started. It’s not clear exactly how long the shooting lasted as details are limited.

Hutchinson died from his injuries and no officers were injured.

The involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave, but as we mentioned, officials expect that they may return to work on Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s homicide unit.
