Doris Payne arrested again, this time in Atlanta

An elderly woman who has made headlines in the Coachella Valley and internationally for stealing high-end jewelry, is now making headlines in Atlanta.

WSB-TV is reporting that Doris Payne was recently arrested after Atlanta police said she slipped a pair of earrings into her pocket at a Christian Dior store inside Saks Fifth Avenue at Phipps Plaza. A loss prevention specialist reported that he observed her on surveillance video, according to police.

“I think these officers just thought it was a run of the mill shoplifting. They took the woman into custody and short time there after they get notice that another jurisdiction had a warrant for her and she was an international thief,” said Sgt. Warren Pickard, with the Atlanta Police Department.

According to the WSB-TV report, Pickard said, “She put them in her pocket and politely walked out of the store.”

Jewelry stores in Charlotte, North Carolina, were on high alert in July after police sent out a warning, believing the well-known thief stole a $33,000 engagement ring from the David Yurman store inside upscale Southpark mall.

Self-proclaimed international jewel thief Doris Payne was taken back into custody in an Indio court in September 2014 for violating probation requirements following her release from prison.

She had been jailed after pleading guilty in April to one felony count each of burglary and grand theft for swiping a 3.5 carat, $22,500 ring on October 21, 2013 from El Paseo Jewelers in Palm Desert.
