Former treasurer accused of taking money from Indio Youth Sports Association
The district attorney’s office has filed a grand theft charge against the former treasurer of the Indio Youth Sports Association, Gregory Siqueiros. He’s also a former Indio police officer.
The Indio Youth Sports Association plays softball and baseball games at Davis Field at South Jackson Park off of Marilyn Street.
We’ve learned that Siqueiros has been charged with one count of grand theft for the unlawful taking of $3,67.27.
News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2’s Natalie Brunell spoke with the league’s president, Daniel Watson, who said the Indio Youth Sports Association services hundreds of east valley kids between the ages of 4 to 14, including about 100 special needs children.
As the treasurer, Siqueiros was in charge of handling the league’s entry fees, which range from $70 to $110. He was in charge of tens of thousands of dollars per year that were meant for things like trophies and equipment for the teams, according to officials.
There was an arrest warrant issued but Siqueiros posted a cash bond and is not in custody. He’s scheduled to be arraigned on November 23 at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
Siqueiros used to be an Indio police officer, who was separated from the agency after about 14 months seven years ago.
The Indio Youth Sports Association sent us the following statement:
Greg Siqueiros was relieved of his duties as Treasurer of IYSA on July 17 , 2014 by the IYSA Executive Board. The decision by the IYSA Executive Board was made under extraordinarily difficult and unfortunate circumstances. Our collective heart breaks for the entire Baseball, Softball and Special Needs community here at IYSA.
Yesterday ‘s arrest of Greg Siqueiros for embezzlement from the IYSA Account is an important moment for our entire IYSA Baseball, Softball and Special Needs community as we move beyond the events of the last year and a half.
We take great pride that our league continues to operate without interruption since the discovery of the missing funds. We are deeply grateful for the volunteers and community members who have stepped-up during this challenging time and worked tirelessly on behalf of the entire IYSA Baseball, Softball and Special Needs community.
We look forward to continuing to build a vibrant future for IYSA, and to ensuring our entire IYSA Baseball, Softball and Special Needs community will continue to grow and remain one of the premier leagues of the Coachella Valley.
Signed,
The Executive Board of Indio Youth Sports Association
