Local girl’s disease inspires career

There are 29 million people in America living with diabetes, Jocelyn Codling is one of them.

“It’s a big life change. It’s a big change. But aside from that, life is normal just like every other kid,” Codling said.

Two years ago Jocelyn was rushed to the hospital with no idea what was happening.

When she was diagnosed she worried the disease would take over her life.

“I thought I wasn’t going to be able to do a lot of things and not body wanted to be my friend,” Codling said.

But the very opposite happened when Jocelyn realized how to manage her diabetes.

“It’s not going to stop me from doing anything, it’s not going to stop me from becoming what I want to be when I grow up,” Codling said.

As for that career choice, she wants to be an endocrinologist.

That’s the type of doctor she saw when she was diagnosed with diabetes.

“When I was diagnosed it really interested me and I felt like I can help other kids and I can do the same thing,” Codling said.

Jocelyn’s mom, Alejandra, said aside from the initial scare, she’s proud of how her daughter is handling her disease.

“I am so proud of her and I encourage her everyday. If this is what you want to be we’re going to strive for that till you get there. I think it’s a good thing for her because she’s learned everyday, she lives with the disease and she can help others,” Alejandra Codling said.

Aside from managing and living with diabetes the whole family supports local awareness efforts, like the ‘Step Out Walk’ in La Quinta.

“I think it’s just awareness that this is a disease and it’s killing people and we need to take better care of ourselves and find a cure, most importantly find a cure,” Alejandra Codling said.

Until a cure is found Jocelyn plans to work hard so one day she can help others just like herself.
