Pride Parade rolls down Palm Springs Sunday

Palm Springs Pride Weekend culminated Sunday with the 29th pride parade in downtown.

More than 100,000 people were expected to attend.

Organizations throughout Southern California marched down Palm Canyon Drive in support of the gay, lesbian, bi sexual and transgender communities.

“All the excitement, all the people coming out and supporting gay, straight I think it’s fabulous,” said Ron Calvert who is visiting from Maui.

But there’s one thing significantly different about this year’s Palm Springs Pride than in years past.

Same sex couples can now get married in all 50 states.

“You feel even better, you feel right, you feel like it should be,” said local Jennifer Sweet.

“It’s been legal here in California, but now everywhere. But now it’s even better because we have nationwide pride,” said local Candice Sweet.

Jennifer and Candice Sweet got married three months ago and said the energy at this year’s parade is unlike any other.

“There was a huge transgender group that just went by and we saw them and they saw us and you feel like you’re part of something. That’s what this is all about. We’re part of something,” Sweet said.

For some, this is their first Palm Springs Pride.

It brings tears to your eyes. It’s great, never thought I’d see it in my lifetime,” said Scott Dean who’s visiting from Maui.

Others have been coming for years.

“Every year it gets better, we love it going downtown. It used to be at the stadium, but this is better,” said Mel Kramer visiting from Michigan.

No matter how long you’ve been coming, everyone agrees you’re always welcomed.

“People are like ‘Why do you need pride?’ Well because we’re proud and we’re proud we have a place we can celebrate it and be safe and have fun,” said Candice Sweet.

Showing how people young and old, from all walks of life, unite under the rainbow flag.
