Caballero fails to make weight, stripped of IBF Bantamweight title, fight cancelled
Randy Caballero waited over a year to defend his IBF bantamweight title. Now, Caballero won’t get the chance at all.
In Friday’s weigh-in at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Randy Caballero weighed in at 123.5 pounds, well over the 118 pound limit for a bantamweight fight. His opponent, Lee Haskins, weighed in at an exact 118 pounds.
Usually fighters are given an hour to make weight after an initial weigh-in, but because Caballero wasn’t within 2 pounds of the 118 pound limit, Caballero was stripped of his title.
The IBF bantamweight world championship is now vacant.
According to the Caballero team, the Coachella native weighed in at 119 pounds on Thursday and the team is unsure how he gained 4.5 pounds in 24 hours.
Caballero’s diet did not change from Thursday to Friday.
***UPDATE***
According to Marcos Caballero, Randy’s father and trainer, as well as the Nevada Commission, the fight has officially been cancelled.
There was a possibility the fight against Haskins would still happen on Saturday at a catch-weight with no title implications, however that plan fell through.
