What rules apply for golf cart drivers on roadways?
After Wednesday’s deadly crash involving a golf cart in Thousand Palms, News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 is looking into the rules and regulations for operating a golf cart on the road.
The woman accused of causing the crash was arrested on suspicion of DUI, and on Thursday, officers with the California Highway Patrol said she’s facing two counts of DUI second-degree murder.
The woman was also estimated to be driving over 50 MPH on a road with a 25 MPH speed limit. There were no golf cart lanes on the road, but officers and neighbors said it’s not unusual to see golf carts driving on roadways in the area.
“We don’t believe the golf cart drivers were doing anything wrong, but when you are in a golf cart or on a bicycle or on a motorcycle you have much lower levels of protection, and when you are putting yourself on roadways with regular vehicles there is that enhanced danger,” said Sgt. Daniel Hesser with the CHP.
Alexandra Pierce is going more in-depth with the rules and regulations for golf carts on roadways. What’s legal and what’s illegal? She’ll break down the details in live reports on KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 Thursday night.
