Roads packed with holiday travelers
Traffic is slow going in and around the Coachella Valley as families hit the road for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Travelers taking I-10 say it’s congested in a lot of places.
“It has been stop and go at 10 and 20 miles per hour with big blocks of stop and go traffic,” said Shawn Nevins who was gassing up his Winnebago at the Flying J in Thousand Palms.
Low gas prices might be another reason why more people are hitting the roads. According to AAA, gas prices haven’t been this low on a Thanksgiving weekend since 2008 and nationally prices are 80 cents less than last year.
“It’s allowing people to spend time with their families and we need prices to be down so people can get to where they want to go,” said Nevins.
“You got to spend that time with your family, and have open communication and in today’s world we are always running to fast and everyone’s on a cell phone and tablet, and traveling together is good and we make it a religion to do this,” said Joseph Havely who is on a road trip with his family.
The California Highway Patrol will be out in force this weekend as well.
“We are trying to save lives, we want as many people to travel the road ways without being involved in a any collisions, and we will be out there enforcing the laws aggressively to ensure that people are going to be driving safely on our road ways,” said Officer Mike Radford of the California Highway Patrol.
