Man charged in Coachella drive-by shooting

Criminal charges were filed Thursday against an 18-year-old Coachella man accused of opening fire at a backyard where people were gathered.

Police arrested 18-year-old Pedro Angel Gonzalez of Coachella for the Nov. 11 attack along the 1300 block of 2nd Street when he appeared at the Larson Justice Center for an unrelated case.

Gonzalez was scheduled to be arraigned in Indio Thursday afternoon on one felony count of assault with a gun, and sentence-enhancing allegations of using a firearm and acting in furtherance of a criminal street gang.

Investigators said Gonzalez leaned out of a car that was driving through an alley to the rear of the house and fired a gun several times at a group of people gathered in a backyard at 8:58 p.m.

Nobody was injured. The vehicle was later found abandoned on Cairo Street.

Gonzalez was arrested Tuesday at the Larson Justice Center when he arrived for an unrelated case and was booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio.

He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, committing a felony while out on bail as well as firearm enhancements.

Gonzalez had his bail set at $350,000, and was set to be in court Thursday.
