The Riverside County Coroner’s office has identified the suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting in Indio over the weekend.

Juan Perez, a 38-year-old from Coachella, was shot and killed on Saturday near Avenue 48 and Madison Street during an exchange of gunfire with police in Indio.

Officers were responding to reports of a stolen golf cart when they discovered Perez was armed with a gun and the shootout began, according to the release.

No word whether the suspect or officers fired first. Perez died at the scene.

The shootout happened near the Grace Chapel. Witnesses reported hearing anywhere from 10-15 gunshots just before noon.

Madison Street was closed throughout the night, according to deputies.
