Fire destroys duplex garage in Cathedral City

Fire officials said a two-car garage was destroyed after a fire sparked in Cathedral City Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the duplex at 33231 Navajo Trail just before 8:30 a.m. They said the fire destroyed the garage and the duplex has been deemed unsafe due to smoke damage.

Nobody was injured and crews had the fire knocked down quickly. Officials estimate the total damage to be at $25,000. A building instructor has to come to the residence before tenants are allowed back inside, according to the Cathedral City Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but Cathedral City fire officials speculate that it was due to faulty equipment in the hot water heater closet.
