Man identified in deadly Varner Road shooting

The coroner’s office has identified the man who was killed in a shooting on Varner Road Friday morning.

Norman Silvester Hytche, a 58-year-old from La Quinta, was shot near Leopard Street, in between Cook Street and Washington Street just before 10 a.m.

Officers said he died at the hospital.

Details behind the shooting are limited at this time. No suspects have been identified and the sheriff’s department continues to investigate. Officers were initially called to the scene on a report of a hit and run, but found Hytche suffering from gunshot wounds.

Xavier Prep High School was briefly put on lockdown as a precaution but that has been lifted.

Varner Road was closed for several hours while officers were on scene but was reopened around 4 p.m. Initial information suggested officers were looking into a hit and run but they learned it was a shooting incident when they arrived to the scene.

Officers said they were looking for a small SUV that fled the scene but there were no other details regarding the suspect or the vehicle. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will deliver more details as soon as they’re available.
