LGBT advocate George Zander passes away
A Palm Springs leader in the LGBT community and equal rights advocate passed away Thursday morning, according to a Facebook post from his husband.
Chris Zander posted the information about his husband, George Zander, on Thursday afternoon. George was 71 years old.
According to a release from the city of Palm Springs, Zander was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center Thursday morning.
Chris wrote, ‘My husband George Zander passed away this morning in loving arms and in very little pain. His passion and strength has paved the road for many of us to follow, and build from. His legacy will live on forever. I love this man more than I love life itself, I can only assume that is what true love is.’
There’s no word on the cause of his death at this time. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 is looking into the details and we’ll have more information as soon as it’s available.
Palm Springs City Council member Geoff Kors released the following statement:
‘I am stunned and deeply saddened by the sudden death of my dear friend, colleague and legendary activist George Zander. When George came to work for Equality California in 2009 he brought such talent and energy to his work to help advance marriage equality, ensure healthcare and provide a safer environment for LGBT students. George was an incredible person, passionate activist and political leader. His work to advance social justice will long be remembered. My condolences to George’s husband Chris.’
Congressman Raul Ruiz also issued a statement about the passing of George Zander.
‘I am heartbroken beyond words to have lost George Zander, a wonderful man, remarkable caring leader, and great personal friend. In my grief I am also outraged at the real consequences of hate and hateful rhetoric that inspires evil people to commit violent hate crimes. I stand strongly against and denounce hate crimes and hateful political rhetoric against LGBT, Hispanics, immigrants, women, Muslims, African Americans or anyone else in our communities,” said Dr. Ruiz. “Monica and I mourn his loss and offer our support and condolences to the Zander Family.”
George and Chris have been in the news recently after the couple was attacked outside of Hunter’s Nightclub in Palm Springs in an alleged hate crime.
