Highway 111 open again after deadly overnight collision

Police were investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car in Cathedral City late Wednesday night.

It happened along Highway 111 between East Canyon Plaza and Perez Road around 10 p.m.

The pedestrian was crossing from north to south and suffered major injuries when hit by a Nissan sedan in the eastbound lanes of East Palm Canyon Drive.

The person’s identity had not yet been released, but officers said the motorist did stop immediately to assist the pedestrian and call 911.

The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk and was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision, but the investigation continues.

Authorities closed a stretch of the roadway with barricades and cones for several hours to investigate the collision. The road was back open for traffic early Thursday morning.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or with information regarding the collision is encouraged to call the Cathedral City Police Department at (760) 770-0343.
