DHS man charged for stabbing girlfriend multiple times
Criminal charges were filed Friday against a 39-year-old Desert Hot Springs man who’s accused of stabbing his live-in girlfriend repeatedly, then leading police on a chase that ended near Cabazon.
Charles Henry Campbell Jr., pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, domestic violence and evading arrest. He also faces several sentence enhancements alleging the use of a weapon during a crime, causing great bodily injury and having recent prior felony convictions.
A judge set bail at $1 million and ordered Campbell to return to court for a felony settlement conference on Jan. 27.
The stabbing was reported just before 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 11700 block of Upland Way, police Sgt. Phil Weigle said. The victim, whose name was withheld, told officers that her boyfriend
stabbed her multiple times and threatened to kill her, the sergeant said.
She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Campbell was gone by the time officers arrived but was spotted near the home at about 8:05 p.m., driving a white 2000 Ford SUV, Weigle said. The suspect allegedly failed to stop for officers who tried to pull him over, prompting a pursuit through Desert Hot Springs and onto westbound I-10, police said.
Campbell was ultimately arrested by officers from Desert Hot Springs and the California Highway Patrol, and he was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.
News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will track the progress of the case as it moves forward in court.
