Local actors, film lovers react to Oscars boycott

The president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is promising quick changes when it comes to diversity.

In the Coachella Valley, actors and film lovers weighed in on the Academy boycott Monday. Dozens gathered in Rancho Mirage for the CV Rep Luminary Luncheon to honor actress and singer Charlotte Rae from the sitcoms “Diff’rent strokes” and “The Facts of Life.”

Event host Don Martin said the Oscars controversy was one of the topics of discussion among the group. He said its time for the Academy to make some changes.

“This really has to happen, it’s obvious there are way too few of any ethnic group in the Oscars voting register and it’s time. Look at the wonderful performances this year and year’s past.”

Action star, former professional athlete and Palm Springs resident Fred “The Hammer” Williamson said he’s not joining other actors and won’t join the boycott.

“If you believe in something you have the right to stand up for it, but don’t include me in it because I’m black and you’re standing up for a black cause. Don’t think I accept your interpretation of what the problem is. I don’t,” said Williamson.

Comedian Chris Rock who is scheduled to host the awards is now facing pressure to bow out.
