Father & daughter hit by car on highway
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a Yucca Valley man and his 6-year-old daughter were hit by a car while walking across Twentynine Palms Highway Tuesday night.
Deputies said the collision occurred shortly after 7 p.m. as 32-year-old Carleton Fonoimoana of Yucca Valley was walking north across the highway near Hermosa Avenue with his daughter, Alofa.
The sheriff’s department said Fonoimoana’s daughter apparently dropped something in the road and walked back into the No. 2 westbound lane to grab it.
Her father followed closely behind her, but both of them were struck by a Honda Civic that was traveling westbound in the No. 2 lane.
Officers said there is a lack of lighting in the area and the 63-year-old man driving the Honda didn’t see them in the road.
According to the release, Fonoimoana was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for head and leg injuries and his daughter was taken to Loma Linda Medical Center for head, arm, and abdominal injuries.
The driver wasn’t hurt and he was released at the scene.
Although no charges have been filed, authorities said the collision is still under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Deputy Greer with the Morongo Basin Station at 760-366-4175.
