CareerBuilder Challenge celebrates the military
It was a patriotic day on the links at the CareerBuilder Challenge Saturday.
The third day of play was designated as Patriot Day.
The day included a golf clinic for military personnel, wine tastings, and career advice.
Veterans and active military members enjoyed views of the 18th hole on the TPC Stadium course at the Patriots Outpost.
Tournament organizers said Patriot Day is their way of honoring the past and the present.
“Well, it’s a special day to us because it really gives us a way to carry on the legacy of Bob Hope. Obviously, the military was a really important element of his heritage and history. So in honoring all of our armed forces on military day, we’re also able to honor Bob Hope,” said Scott Easton, Managing director of the CareerBuilder Challenge.
The Military Warriors Support Foundation donated a mortgage free home to one family, the biggest prize of the day.
But before the day was done, one of the players was singled out for all they’ve done to support veterans.
Phil Mickelson and his wife were honored on hole 18 for their support with the armed forces.
Mickelson and his wife Amy created “Birdies for the Brave” in 2006. An organization that supports combat-wounded veterans.
The PGA Tour adopted the program, hosting different fundraising events at PGA Tour tournaments.
More than $15 million has been raised for non-profit military groups, ranging from financial aid, counseling and housing.
