Men identified in deadly North Palm Springs crash

We’re learning more about a deadly crash that happened Sunday night near the border of Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs.

According to Desert Hot Springs Police Chief Dale Mondary, married couples were in each of the cars and both husbands were killed and their wives were hospitalized. The crash occurred just after 7 p.m. on North Indian Canyon Drive between 18th Avenue and 19th Avenue.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the victims on Tuesday morning as 49-year-old James Scott of Cathedral City and 58-year-old John Tavernier of North Palm Springs.

Chief Mondary said one couple was on the way home from a restaurant as they were heading north on Indian Canyon Drive. The other vehicle was traveling southbound when the driver moved into oncoming traffic, colliding with the other vehicle.

The couple in the northbound vehicle was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center where the husband died. His wife is in stable condition, according to police.

The wife in the second vehicle was taken to Eisenhower Medical Center and she’s also in stable condition, Mondary said.

North Indian Canyon was closed in the area for several hours Sunday night while officers investigated the crash. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will post updated information as officers continue to investigate.
