Small plane which took off from Palm Springs crashes in Northern California

Officials say a small plane bound from Palm Springs to Northern California crashed near an airport in Santa Rosa, killing both people on board.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor tells The Associated Press that the single-engine Piper PA-24 crashed under unknown circumstances Thursday night on its final approach to Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.

County sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Crum told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat that the two people aboard the two-seat plane both died, most likely on impact.

Crum said the plane was mangled and had come to rest in a muddy field about two miles from the airport when emergency responders arrived. It did not hit any trees or structures and there was no fire.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
