CCPD ID’s man who was gunned down near Ramon Road

The Cathedral City Police Department has released the identity of the 22-year-old man who was shot and killed Sunday night on Ramon Road near Landau Blvd, and officers said they have received surveillance video from businesses as they continue to comb for clues.

Robert Yerena of Cathedral City was gunned down while driving his car in the 68100 block of Ramon Road just after 8:30 p.m.

Officers in the area, on an unrelated call, heard the gunshots and responded to the scene. According to police, Yerena had been driving east on Ramon Road in his silver 2001 Chrysler Sebring, and evidence suggests the gunfire came from another vehicle.

After being shot, Yerena apparently turned into the Landau Plaza parking lot and crashed into a tree near Aaron’s Furniture. Paramedics attempted to save his life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the only one in the car, officers said.

Cathedral City police officers said they still don’t have any solid leads into his murder but they’re hoping the surveillance video might point them in the right direction.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cathedral City Police Department at 760 770-0313.

This was the first homicide in the Coachella Valley this year.
