Victim identified in I-10 crash in Indio

A woman’s car flipped on I-10 and then was struck by a big rig Sunday morning, shutting down three eastbound lanes at Indio Blvd for about seven hours.

Rescuers were trying to free the woman from inside her car around 7 a.m. when the truck plowed through orange cones and into the Jetta, killing 56-year-old Maria Vera of Palm Desert.

One passenger escaped the wreckage. The driver of the big rig was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the big rig was not arrested, according to the California Highway Patrol.

All eastbound lanes were blocked immediately following the crash. The CHP filtered traffic through the left lane of the freeway through most of Sunday until 2:20 p.m., when all lanes were reopened.
