22-year-old man dies after being hit by car in Palm Desert

A 22-year-old man died Monday night after being hit by a car in Palm Desert.

Authorities said Joseph Eilers was hit by a car in the eastbound lanes of Highway 111 at Panorama Drive just before 8:30 p.m. When offices arrived, Eilers was in the roadway and they rushed him to the hospital where he later died.

Officers said speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in the collision.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Armando Munoz said the driver is cooperating with the investigation. “At this time drugs and alcohol do not seem to be a factor,” Munoz said.

Authorities haven’t said if Eilers was in the crosswalk at the time of the crash. Eastbound lanes of Highway 111 between Deep Canyon and El Paseo were shut down for several hours while officers were on scene.
