BNP Paribas Open women’s singles qualifiers wrap up
Women’s singles qualifying play for the 2016 BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament took place Monday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with 48 players seeking 12 spots in the 96-player main draw.
Play began at 11 a.m. and the gates opened at 10 a.m. Admission was free.
Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany is the highest ranked player in qualifying; 60th on the Women’s Tennis Association singles rankings. She will face Julia Glushko of Israel in the final match on the Stadium 4 court.
The highest-seeded American in the qualifying draw is Nicole Gibbs, who is seeded 16th and 104th on the WTA singles rankings. The two-time NCAA singles champion from Stanford will face Victoria Golubic of Switzerland in the final match on the Stadium 3 court.
Jessica Pegula, the 22-year-old daughter of Terry Pegula, the owner of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, will face Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the third match on the Stadium 3 court.
Players winning two matches in qualifying will advance to the main draw. Players losing in Monday’s qualifying matches will receive $1,825.
Men’s qualifying play is scheduled to begin Tuesday, women’s main draw play Wednesday and men’s main draw play Thursday.
