SWAT standoff ends in Cathedral City

The Cathedral City Police Department said the suspect in Thursday’s standoff is in custody after surrendering to authorities. The standoff ended at about 2:30 p.m.

Officers responded to the home in the 27300 block of Avenida Quintana, which is just north of Vista Chino, at about 10:40 a.m. to serve a search warrant. Officials said two men came outside of the home when detectives arrived. One of them was taken into custody on an arrest warrant while the other was detained while the search warrant was being executed, officers said in a release.

A third man refused to come out of the house for more than three hours, despite loud speaker announcements from police, horns, sirens and two flashbang devices which were deployed by the front door of the home, according to Lt. Glen Haas with the Cathedral City Police Department.

Information suggested there may be firearms in the house so the Desert Regional SWAT Team was called to handle the situation. At about 2:30 p.m., a robot was used to locate the suspect inside the house, and he was taken into custody, Lt. Haas said in the release.

Officers closed Avenida Quintana in the neighborhood while the standoff occurred.

No additional information about the suspects will be released at this time due to the ongoing investigation. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will provide updates as the investigation moves forward.
