Activists honor public figures at Palm Springs LGBT event
Local activists honored two public figures known for their work in the LGBT community.
Hundreds of people gathered Saturday at Houston South in Palm Springs for the annual National Center for Lesbian Rights’ Garden Party.
This year, members honored California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski for their efforts for LGBT equality.
“They’re both heros to the community,” Palm Springs City Councilmember Geoff Kors said. “I think they both really demonstrate that if you live by your convictions, and you live your life openly and honestly, you really can make change. And they both have made tremendous change.”
NCLR members say Newsom, who received the Champion Award, is known for his work as San Francisco’s mayor in 2004 by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Biskupski, who members say made history as Salt Lake City’s first openly LGBT mayor, received the Trailblazer award.
