Firefighters contain Mecca brush fire

Avenue 66 was closed from the 86 Expressway to Lincoln Street while Cal Fire battled a brush fire that sparked in Mecca at about 2:45 p.m. Monday. Firefighters contained the fire by about 5 p.m. and stopped the forward progress of the blaze.

Officials said about a half dozen palm trees caught fire and the blaze was growing rapidly at about 2 1/2 to 3-acres.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 confirmed that one firefighter was taken to J.F.K. Memorial Hospital with a minor injury after hurting his knee.

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 was at the scene as firefighters continued to douse the remaining flames Monday night. There’s no word what caused the fire at this time.
